The Legion's Pipers and Drummers

Piping is a very Scottish recreation and is no less so amongst the members of The Royal British Legion Scotland.

There is no Legion Pipe Band as such, instead there are thirty-two Bands throughout Scotland, which are recognised and sponsored by a Branch of the Legion.  Some of the bands are competitive bands which means that they take part in domestic and individual competitions organised by The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.  Many of the Bands which do not aspire to the National level of playing, compete as groups or individuals in the Legion’s two major competitions, the Miniband and the Solo Piping, held in the Spring.  The Solo Piping Championships, which admits entrants from all branches of the Armed Services as well as Legion members, is acknowledged as being in the top four competitions in Scottish Piping circles.

As a spectator (free entry to the general public to the above named Championships), you would see that there are a fair number of young boys and girls taking part.  This is because there is a deliberate policy of involving and encouraging youngsters in the discipline and benefits of being a Pipe Band Member.  Also, there is the possibility that some of these young players may choose to become Pipers and Drummers in Her Majesty’s Forces.

The National Piping Committee, which organises this event, is entirely appreciative of the fact that it is the support that is gained from the Branches and the members, in general, who allow their Bands to take part, which makes the whole event possible.

The Convener and Members of the National Piping Committee of The Royal British Legion Scotland thank all Competitors and Supporters.  Please continue to give help and encouragement in furthering the art of the Highland Bagpipe and the principles and objectives of The Legion.
